About Joel
Leadership gets more complicated as responsibility grows.
For nearly three decades, I have worked with leaders, teams, and organizations navigating growth, change, greater responsibility, and consequential decisions. I have also spent much of that time as a senior executive and partner myself, leading teams, developing people, making difficult decisions, and carrying responsibility for organizational performance.

I began my career as a U.S. Army officer and later spent more than two decades in senior leadership, including serving as a Senior Vice President and Partner. Across those roles, I have led teams, developed leaders, coached executives, and helped organizations work through periods of growth, transition, and increasing complexity.
One pattern keeps showing up.
The ways of leading that create success at one stage do not always create the capacity needed for the next one. A capable leader can become too central. A leadership team can become misaligned or avoid the conversations it most needs to have. Trust can erode. Accountability can weaken. Roles, decisions, and priorities can become unclear as the organization grows.
Those are not always individual leadership problems. Sometimes the constraint sits with the leader. Sometimes it sits in the leadership team. Sometimes it is embedded in the organization itself.

That is the work I do today: helping leaders, leadership teams, and organizations understand what is actually getting in the way and build the capacity they need next.
Sometimes that means clearer direction and priorities. Sometimes it means stronger alignment, better decisions, greater ownership, or creating enough trust and candor for people to engage disagreement productively and hold one another accountable.
My approach is diagnostic before prescriptive. I begin with what the organization is trying to accomplish, where it is struggling, and where the real constraint lives.
I also believe strong leadership requires holding tensions: performance and people, accountability and care, authority and humility, responsibility and releasing control.
That perspective is also behind my book, It’s Not About Me, a collection of fifty-two reflections drawn from the successes, failures, relationships, and ordinary moments that have shaped how I think about leadership.
